How to manage plastic waste?

Plastic is an emerging problem in the modern world though there are several merits and demerits to it, I would like to put light on how we can manage waste to reduce carbon emission.   

Plastic is a man made non biodegradable product which breaks down into micro polymers or micro plastics making it harmful towards the environment on a long term basis. Plastic can be easily reformed into other possibilities hence it can be easier to manage it without much hassle. There are infinite methods to reuse plastic again and again until it can be recycled, millions of plastics in different shapes and forms are left in landfills either tossed onto the street or burnt into carbon fumes.

Plastic can be reused or upcycled creatively for household, gardening, toiletry and utility purposes. Many global countries are using alternatives from plastic waste in order to manage it effectively since it is easier. Plastic is durable, cheap & reprocessed easily hence making them reusable for required purposes. 

In today’s generation plastic can be found everywhere right from product development to packaging as well shipping goods. This states that the amount of plastic that has been used and will be used is enormous, Accordingly we need to be conscious of our consumption pattern. Since the 1950s, around 8.3 billion tons of plastic have been produced worldwide.

Yes, it can be difficult to stop the demand but if we become wise in saying no to single use plastic we can reach a level of neutrality in the next decade. 

Circular economy is the brightest solution for plastic waste management as it follows a strategic pattern due to which it can cause less carbon emission and also less waste generation, Several countries in Europe have adapted to this technique and have become zero waste nations which is a remarkable achievement. 

India as a country has shown a sense of responsibility during the pandemic and also experienced environmental change due to less movement and limited consumptions. If we follow the same approach this world will become a better place within no time.

IEA Says Global CO2 Emissions Rising Again After Nearly 6% Fall Last Year

Global carbon dioxide emissions dropped by 5.8% in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic slowed economic activity, but they rebounded at the end of the year and are on course to rise further, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said on Tuesday.

Major economies led a rebound in December when emissions were 2%, or 60 million tonnes, higher than in December 2019, as a pick-up in economic activity increased energy demand.

China, the world’s biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, was the only country that experienced an increase in emissions last year of 0.8%, or 75 million tonnes, from 2019 levels, the IEA said in a report.

In India, the world’s third biggest emitter, emissions rose above 2019 levels from last September as economic activity increased and restrictions were relaxed.

“The rebound in global carbon emissions toward the end of last year is a stark warning that not enough is being done to accelerate clean energy transitions worldwide,” Fatih Birol, IEA executive director, said.

“If current expectations for a global economic rebound this year are confirmed, and in the absence of major policy changes in the world’s largest economies, global emissions are likely to increase in 2021,” he added.

Primary energy demand fell 4% in 2020 as lockdowns and other restrictions limited industrial activity and transport.

This prompted an unprecedented decline of almost 2 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide – the equivalent of removing all the European Union’s emissions from the global total, the IEA said.

In the global power sector last year, emissions fell by 3.3%, the largest absolute fall on record. Although energy demand decreased, the growth of renewables generation was the biggest contributor to the fall.

The share of renewables in power generation rose to 29% last year from 27% in 2019. Emissions from transport fell by 14% last year from 2019 levels.

Budget 2021-22: What Does it Hold for Women ‘s Safety, Employment and Life?

While there have been some small announcements for women in the budget, women’s core concerns over food and nutrition, employment and livelihoods, and prevention of violence and safety after a year of unprecedented hardship need a further boost.

The Finance Minister’s speech in the Union Budget 2021-22 acknowledged the role of frontline workers in battling the pandemic throughout last year and expressed gratitude for their efforts. It is important to note that almost all of these frontline workers are women and budget announcements have an important impact on the lives of women.

Gender-responsive budgeting in India was adopted in 2005 and since then there have been steady budgetary allocations to different programmes specific to women and in women–related programmes, which are usually part of the gender budget statement of the Annual budget documents. This year has also not been an exception. However, it will be important to note that the pandemic year witnessed hardships for women in terms of securing food and nutrition security, a crisis of employment and livelihood opportunities, increased burden of unpaid work for women and also increased incidence of violence. It is in this backdrop we look at the provisions made for women in this budget.

Two significant announcements that directly impact women’s labour force participation were made by the Finance Minister in her speech.

The first was to universalise water supply facilities through the Jal Jeevan Mission in both rural and urban areas and allocating a massive Rs. 50,000 crores to the programme.

This allocation needs to translate into the reality of providing clean drinking water facilities across households in the remotest parts of the country. This is a welcome step that has the potential to reduce women’s time spent on collecting water. The recent time use survey 2019 shows that women spend on an average up to 55 minutes daily to fetch water for the household. Having provided a steady source of the water supply has immense potential to reduce this time and cater to the urgent need to improve household infrastructure for women.

The second announcement pertained to extending the coverage of social security benefits for gig and platform workers. It is important in the current context as these are emerging avenues of women’s employment in urban India. The IWWAGE report shows how attractive these opportunities are for women and extending the social security coverage makes the sector even better.

The budget allocations under the social security schemes for workers show an increased allocation of Rs. 3100 crores under Atmanirbhar Bharat Rojgar Yojana – a programme launched as a new scheme to encourage new employment in post lockdown period by providing a fixed share of wages into the EPF funds. While this may be important, the budget does not provide extra allocations for the social security of gig and platform workers separately.

In the wake of the pandemic and its unequal impact on women, an analysis of the GB however reveals certain underwhelming trends. The gender budget (GB) stands at Rs. 153,326 crore for 2021-22 BE. Last year’s allocation was Rs. 143,461 crore (BE). As a proportion of total expenditure, the current allocation has fallen to 4.4%, from 4.7% last year.

In the same vein, the allocations to women-specific programmes reported in part A of the GB statement Rs. 28,568 crores last year to Rs. 25,261 crores – a decline of almost 12%. Similarly, allocations to the Ministry of Women and Child Development also show a decline of 18.5% since last year.

While the quantum of allocations to the most important programmes for women reported in the budget 2021-22 shows a status quo or a decline, few accounting changes and a couple of interesting allocations towards women could be located. The announcement of Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 clubs the erstwhile umbrella ICDS, Poshan Abhiyan, Scheme for Adolescent Girls, and National Crèche Scheme and allocates only Rs. 20,105 crores, the Mission Shakti –SAMARTHYA clubs smaller programmes including Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao. The detailed breakups and comparisons are provided in Figure 1 and 2. below:

The numbers show that allocations to crucial programmes catering to nutrition, creches, and women’s safety and protection have at best stayed the same if not reduced. The allocation to the umbrella ICDS schemes that are under the new ‘SAKSHAM’ head clearly shows a 23% decline of Rs. 5952 crores. We also do not see separate allocations for One-Stop Centres, women helpline, Swadhar Greh, Ujjawala and so on which were overwhelmingly used during the pandemic, with heightened reports of violence against women. Instead, those have been clubbed under Mission Shakti— SAMBAL (See Figure 3 below).

Both MGNREGA and NRLM show increments in budgets since last year. However, the increase in the MGNREGA budget by Rs. 11,500 crores will also need to cater to the increased demand for jobs under the programme. In fact, the GB reports an allocation of only 33% of the total NREGA allocations for women while the Economic Survey itself highlights that almost 50% of all NREGA employment are held by women. These figures themselves reveal the need for greater allocation even without expanding the number of days of employment generated under the programme.

The NRLM budget also shows an increase of almost Rs. 4000 crores from the previous year on account of the programme component. However, the allocations do not make it clear whether the increment is on account of increased expenditure on DDU-GKY, or on account of interest subventions to SHGs or the loan moratoriums.

Despite these dampers, an interesting allocation in the GB geared towards closing the gendered digital divide is also spotted. According to the NSS-MoSPI data from 2017-18, only 38% of women own mobile phones and 12.8% use computers compared to the respective male figures of 71% and 20%. Given the need to be digitally included, the GB includes Rs. 120 crores (or almost 40%) of the allocations to Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan – digital literacy programme for rural areas. Albeit small yet in the last few years, this is the first time that GB has included part of the PMGDISHA in its statement. This may have the potential for improving women’s access to opportunities created through digital platforms.

So while there have been some small announcements for women in the budget, women’s core concerns over food and nutrition, employment and livelihoods and prevention of violence and safety after a year of unprecedented hardship need a further boost. These concerns assumed importance in all pre-budget discussions and also made space into the Economic Survey.

While announcements in the budget indicate acknowledgement of these issues, which is a significant first step, budgetary allocations to support them would be truly transformative for half of India’s population.

Flipkart to deploy more than 25,000 Electric Vehicles in its Supply Chain to achieve 100% transition to electric mobility by 2030

Flipkart, India’s homegrown e-commerce marketplace, recently announced that it will deploy more than 25,000 electric vehicles by 2030. This is in line with Flipkart’s public commitment to transition to electric vehicles across its city logistics fleet and help set up charging infrastructure around delivery hubs and offices to fast track the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in India. Flipkart has already started deploying 2-wheeler and 3-wheeler electric vehicles in multiple locations for delivery across the country, including in Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Guwahati and Pune, to name a few. 

Flipkart’s electric fleet will include 2-wheeler, 3-wheeler, and 4-wheeler vehicles designed and assembled in India, helping boost local innovation and economy. Flipkart has partnered with leading electric vehicle manufacturers, including Hero Electric, Mahindra Electric and Piaggio, for specific vehicles to be deployed for its first and last-mile delivery fleet across the country. 

Flipkart will also place requirements in service contracts, install charging infrastructure close to its 1,400 supply chain facilities, conduct awareness programs, and encourage delivery executives to use EVs.

Cognizant Commits $250 Million to Global CSR Initiatives

‘Transparent solar cells’ can take us towards a new era of personalized energy

Solar power has shown immense potential as a futuristic, ‘clean’ source of energy. No wonder environmentalists worldwide have been looking for ways to advance the current solar cell technology. Now, scientists have put forth an innovative design for the development of a high-power transparent solar cell. This innovation brings us closer to realizing our goal of a sustainable green future with off-the-grid living.

Today, the imminent climate change crisis demands a shift from conventionally used fossil fuels to efficient sources of green energy. This has led to researchers looking into the concept of “personalized energy,” which would make on-site energy generation possible. For example, solar cells could possibly be integrated into windows, vehicles, cellphone screens, and other everyday products. But for this, it is important for the solar panels to be handy and transparent. To this end, scientists have recently developed “transparent photovoltaic” (TPV) devices — transparent versions of the traditional solar cell. Unlike the conventionally dark, opaque solar cells (which absorb visible light), TPVs make use of the “invisible” light that falls in the ultraviolet (UV) range.

Conventional solar cells can be either “wet type” (solution-based) or “dry type” (made up of metal-oxide semiconductors). Of these, dry-type solar cells have a slight edge over the wet-type ones: they are more reliable, eco-friendly, and cost-effective. Moreover, metal-oxides are well-suited to make use of UV light. Despite all this, however, the potential of metal-oxide TPVs has not been fully explored until now.

Researchers from Incheon National University, Republic of Korea, came up with an innovative design for a metal-oxide-based TPV device, consisting of an ultra-thin layer of silicon (Si). Based on the findings, the research team is optimistic that the real-life applicability of this new TPV design will soon be possible. As for potential applications, there are plenty, as Prof Joondong Kim, who led the study explains, “We hope to extend the use of our TPV design to all kinds of material, right from glass buildings to mobile devices like electric cars, smartphones, and sensors.” Says Not just this, the team is excited to take their design to the next level, by using innovative materials such as 2D semiconductors, nanocrystals of metal-oxides, and sulfide semiconductors. As Prof Kim concludes, “Our research is essential for a sustainable green future — especially to connect the clean energy system with no or minimal carbon footprint.”

Meanwhile, in the US, Researchers at Michigan State University (MSU) originally created the first fully transparent solar concentrator in 2014. This clear solar panel could turn virtually any glass sheet or window into a PV cell. By 2020, researchers in the U.S. and Europe have already achieved full transparency for solar glass.

Photovoltaic glass is probably the most cutting-edge new solar panel technology that promises to be a game-changer in expanding the scope of solar. These are transparent solar panels that can literally generate electricity from windows—in offices, homes, car’s sunroof, or even smartphones.  The two major types of transparent solar panels include partial and full transparent panels. As these solar power windows can simply replace the traditional glass windows in offices and homes, the technology holds the potential to virtually turn every building in the United States and the world into a solar producer. 

Just the way solar roof panels are currently produced using different technologies, solar windows are also being developed using different techniques. 

The potential to generate renewable, clean energy from the sun is enormous with transparent solar panels, considering the number of skyscrapers and buildings already in existence or under construction with a massive amount of glass surface.

According to Richard Lunt, the Johansen Crosby Endowed Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at MSU, highly transparent solar cells represent the “wave of the future” for new solar panel technologies.

Lunt says that these clear solar panels have a similar power-generation potential as rooftop solar, along with additional applications to improve the efficiency of buildings, cars and mobile devices. Lunt and his team estimate that the U.S. alone has about 5 to 7 billion square meters of glass surface at present. (Just in the last 10 years, as much as 682 million sq. ft. of office space has been added in the U.S.).

With this much glass surface to cover, transparent solar panel technology has the potential to meet about 40 per cent of the country’s annual energy demand. This potential is nearly the same as that of rooftop solar. When both these technologies are deployed complimentarily, it could help meet nearly 100 per cent of the U.S. electricity needs if we also improve energy storage.

MG Motor rolls out 50,000th Hector in India: All-women crew makes it

End-to-end production of this MG Hector was undertaken by the crew. This included panel-pressing, paint job, welding and even the production tests. MG Motor aims to achieve 50% gender diversity in its organisation in future and pave the way for a balanced workforce.

MG Motor India has manufactured its 50,000th Hector with an all-women crew in Gujarat’s Vadodara. Women-only teams were involved in panel-pressing of sheet metal and welding to painting jobs as well as carrying out post-production test runs. 

MG said the initiative has created a new benchmark while celebrating `Diversity’ – one of the core pillars of the automaker – as women led the end-to-end production.

The automaker aims to achieve 50% gender diversity in its organisation in future and pave the way for a balanced workforce.

MG Motor India has its manufacturing facility in Gujarat’s Halol (Panchmahal district) which comprises a 33% share of women in its workforce across all business functions. If trained well, both men and women can handle the machinery with equal competency.

Rajeev Chaba, president and managing director, MG Motor India, said, “The rollout of our 50,000th Hector by an all-women crew comes as an honour to their contributions and hard work. It also demonstrates that glass ceilings no longer exist even in an erstwhile male-dominated industry such as automobile manufacturing. We believe that it will inspire more women to join the automotive industry in India and abroad.”

SP, Indira Mukherjee from Jhargram, West Bengal saves bulls from Mafia

An act of bravery by the Superintendent of Police Indira Mukherjee posted at Jhargram, West Bengal. Her prompt action led to the recovery of bulls from armed goons early morning today.

A truck carrying 13 bulls to Dhyan Foundation Chakulia gaushala, Jharkhand was stopped and looted by armed goons in Jambani PS Limits, West Bengal.

These bulls were earlier rescued from the cattle mafia by the Border Security Force at Indo Bangladesh border and handed over to Dhyan Foundation Kishanganj Gaushala for subsequent care. As the gaushala exceeded its keeping capacity, the bulls were being shifted to the NGOs Chakulia Gaushala, which is also the country’s largest Nandi Shala housing over 7000 rescued bulls and cows.

Enroute, the truck driver took a wrong turn and stopped to ask way at Podihati Village. In no time, the locals armed with weapons surrounded the truck, threatened the drivers and took away the cattle.

The drivers somehow managed to escape and enter Jharkhand and complained at Chakulia police station. Jhargram SP, Indira Mukherjee was prompt in action and very soon all the bulls were recovered. They are now safe at the gaushala.


The region is notorious for the activities of the cattle mafia. As per sources, many cattle are hoarded in the local masjid. A similar raid is required to rescue those cattle as well.

Treatment of sick and injured animals including plastic removal surgeries, prosthetic limb replacements, vaccination drives, massage and physiotherapy and recovery under the personal care and attention of volunteers.

Emergency relief programs for calamity struck cattle. Some examples include Chitradurg (Karnataka, 2019), Rewa (Madhya Pradesh, 2018), Kollegal (Karnataka, 2017), Mahoba (Uttar Pradesh, 2017), Latur (Maharashtra, 2016), Dausa (Rajasthan, 2016 & 2017), Hingonia (Rajasthan, 2016)

Animal Awareness Programs in schools, colleges, institutions and MNCs. Reflective Neck Belt distribution to prevent stray accidents on roads. They produce and promote products made from cattle wastes to make the gaushalas self-sustainable under the banner of ‘Nandi Products’.

Since November 2018, they are working shoulder to shoulder with the border security force of India to rehabilitate the cattle rescued by BSF at the Indo Bangladesh border and have successfully transported and rehabilitated nearly 50,000 such cattle to date. According to the BSF, they are the ONLY organization that is working for this cause.

Dhyan Foundation is a recognized Animal Welfare Organisation registered with the Animal Welfare Board of India ((ND054/2019)). We are a member of the State (Delhi) Advisory Board for Animal Welfare and of the Goa Animal Welfare Board.
