THEVASA – Clothes that make you feel at Home

by Team Conscious Carma June 12, 2023
written by Team Conscious Carma

Originating from the Sankrit word ‘vasa’, Thevasa literally translates to a home. A home that stems its roots from a land of kaleidoscopic history and an ever-rich cultural heritage. Founders Himanshu Wardhan and Neha Kalra introduced Thevasa in 2019 to create an experience that pushes India’s artisanal history to the forefront.

Inspiration

Co- Founder Himanshu Wardhan’s inspiration to contemporise Traditional Indian crafts thereby making them commercially viable, stemmed from his enriching experience of 5 years spent setting up Etsy India for the global market. He then decided to pay homage to his Indian roots by joining his wife and co-founder Neha Kalra full time with Thevasa.

“Thevasa began as an exploration of everything Indian; everything that reminds us of our Vasa (Sanskrit for home). We have traveled all over and realised how little we know of this land. At Thevasa, we’re coming back home with dreams from all over the  world.” says Himanshu Wardhan, Co-Founder, Thevasa

Having lived in California, Mumbai and Delhi, India remains a recurring source of inspiration for the husband-wife duo. They quickly realised the potential in the market space for contemporary, minimalistic designs that would serve the purpose of functionality and the feeling of living in clothing, that makes you feel “at home”. Thevasa launched to contemporize an intricate culture that spans a few hundred decades and re-look at traditional designs through a modern outlook.

Today, the brand works with artisans across India, seamlessly amalgamating and experimenting age-old design techniques with modern aesthetics and silhouettes. From sketching singular details to selecting the fabric, embroidery and cut, the design team at Thevasa is deeply involved with artisans in every step of the manufacturing process.

Moving towards being a 100% sustainable fashion brand

For us, being sustainable is not a marketing gimmick or a positioning strategy, but something that we believe in and try to be as sustainable as possible without talking much about it. We try to avoid plastics in our packing and try to recycle and reuse as much as possible, be it with our products or at our experience centre. We use 100% certified compostable bag made from plastic start with no microplastic for our online orders. At our retail stores we use paper bags or cloth totes. Our products are mostly made of natural materials. We upcycle the fabric waste and create small usable products such as bags, pouches and Kids garments etc

Affordable Conscious Luxury Fashion

We believe that it’s very important to offer conscious design at affordable pricing because if the product is not accessible then customers will continue to opt for other non-sustainable products. Our price points are very accessible for a designer brand that is innovating with new contemporary designs and making handcrafted products.

Vision & Mission

Our vision is to collaborate with artisans from all parts of India, and keep exploring and experimenting the diverse and rich cultural heritage of India. The biggest source of Inspiration of our designs is “Incredible India”.

The brand also intends to have a dense Pan India Retail presence in the near future.

Dennison – scaling heights with sustainable fashion

by Team Conscious Carma February 21, 2023
written by Team Conscious Carma

Dennison, founded by Ashwini Seth, a second-generation entrepreneur, who learnt the nuances of fabric and the business from his father Rajendra Seth. “Growing up in the natural smell of fabric lumps, I learnt a lot about customer behaviour and business sense right from my childhood days. The love of fabric runs in my family” says Ashwini, who with a vivacious mind of his own,  expanded the business horizons, by branching out independently into the e-commerce side of it.

While Ashwini focused on Menswear, his wife and co-founder Sonalika Bansal prompted Ashwani to branch out into women’s clothing. The brand is applauded for its fabric, style and comfort and is being adorned by the fashion-conscious people

Adding Sustainability in their collection

With the desire to reduce the environmental impact of fashion, the duo launched their sustainable clothing line in Jan 2022. “Right now, we have launched the shirts & soon we are coming up with sustainable solutions across all the categories which are available with us.  Creating awareness about the climate change through our clothing and encouraging people to shift to sustainable clothing, motivates us to become more conscious. From our fabric to accessories and packaging, everything is eco-friendly and sustainable”, says Sonalika.

Bottlenecks

We wanted to be sure whatever we are offering to our customers must be ethically sourced. So it took us a while to find the desired supplier who is organic certified (GOTS compliance)

Milestones

In Gwalior, we are one of the pioneers in sustainable clothing, which is a big milestone we have achieved. Also, it has led us to meet the increasing demand for sustainable products. And differentiate the company’s products from competitors.

Launching a sustainable hemp collection is itself a milestone. We are developing this category and sure to achieve many more milestones in sustainable clothing.

Vision

Our vision is to be an affordable & sustainable brand.

UNIREC unveils garments from recycled plastic Pet bottles

by Team Conscious Carma June 25, 2022
written by Team Conscious Carma

Plastic  is  a  synthetic  material  which  is  widely  used  in  a  variety of sectors.  A huge amount of plastic is produced and dumped into the environment which doesn’t degrade naturally.  Ever since the breakdown of COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an unprecedented use of plastic in our daily lives, more out of fear than out of need – be it in the form of PET bottles, masks, bags or disposable cutlery and crockery. “Understanding this global issue of sustainability, UNIREC – a unit of BrandStore India Private Limited’s Corporate launched with a focus on creating a brand where every product is manufactured using recycled plastic PET bottles and thereby reducing the carbon footprints. The brand’s vision is to create a sustainable world, ensuring zero effect (on climate) and zero defects (on the products) manufactured”, says Kapil Bhatia, CEO and Founder of UNIREC

India produces more than 25000 tonnes of plastic a day or 16.5 billion tons of plastic a year. On an average, every Indian consumes around 11kg of plastic per annum. However PET bottles can be recycled and converted into its original form i.e. plastic chips which can then be used to manufacture polyester fabric. This polyester fabric when blended with cotton or other such fabrics can definitely help in reducing the carbon footprints and carbon emissions. Thus, the problem and solution lies side-by-side.

UNIREC is the first sustainable brand from India that manufactures garments made from recycled PET bottles. Every garment made by UNIREC helps in recycling on an average 10 plastic bottles of 1 ltr each. While there are brands which do manufacture tshirts currently, UNIREC is the first brand in the country which not only manufactures tshirts but also formal jackets, sleeveless jackets, trousers and very soon will be launching their shirts collection also.

The team at UNIREC, under the supervision of  Kapil, a stalwart in the garment industry and a director of a reputed mens wear brand, is turning this global issue of plastic waste into opportunity and constantly working to create products that are environmentally friendly and are also in line with the latest fashion trends. Under the brand UNIREC – variety of products are available which includes pants, trousers, jackets and corporate uniforms.

UNIREC is not only manufacturing garments made from recycled PET bottles but also looking at finding solutions for up cycling garments in different shapes and forms so as to make sure that the life cycle of the fabric goes up all while reducing the impact on the environment.

CHOLI BOLI – Garments that speak

by Team Conscious Carma June 21, 2022
written by Team Conscious Carma

CHOLI BOLI as the name suggests are garments that speak! The concept evolved when the team behind CHOLI BOLI sat to discuss the limitations in donning a Saree in formal occasions and the general distaste that the younger generation has towards this very Indian dress. We realized that while Sarees evolved over time, the upper garment behind the saree still has a long way to go. One more important factor that went unnoticed through generations was that “blouse” and the current generic avatar that it assumes is highly inspired by the western fashion world. They are tight! They are meant to be tight considering that the humble blouse evolved from the western fashion of tight corseted inner wears – a must in colonial women fashion. Bequeathed to us by the Raj, it was Jnananandini Debi, the wife of Satyendranath Tagore – brother of the famous Nobel Laurette Rabindranath Tagore – who popularized the blouses, jackets, chemises and the modern style of saree today after she was reportedly refused entry to clubs under the British Raj for wearing the saree draped over her bare breasts. “Blouses” were therefore born out of “oppression” and the premise of “fitting in” like Satyendranath’s wife did and like Rabindranath insisted the same upon his wife!

The earliest representations of women in India show them with minimal clothing. Both men and women did not cover much of their torsos. Having said a piece of cloth did cover the breasts over time and they were probably termed “kacholi” worn over “dhotis” (both men and women wore dhoti then). For a really long period of time though women did not wear their “blouses” in the Eastern and the Southern parts of India. By then the “Cholis” had taken birth through the western and north-western parts of India with the fashion acculturisation of the Mughals and the indigenous “kacholis”! Cholis on the other hand were not a symbol of oppression but fashion and had its own language. Ancient Indian calendar art shows them in myriad lengths and the medieval Mughal murals in their varied transparencies. Having said, they became garments that spoke dollops of attitude about the women in that era. With this idea in mind, the conception of CHOLI BOLI took place. Albeit with the modern twist!

ABOUT CHOLI BOLI

CHOLI BOLI is a unique range of ergonomic cholis that defies “too-tight form fitting” garments to bring you aesthetically designed comfort that speak your attitude. Gone are the days of wriggling into blouses (most times with the help of others) and the days of choosing a blouse to match the saree which covered or draped over you. It is time for bold-speak where you can toss the drape aside to reveal your true nature to the world. Now match the saree with these statement Cholis that speaks dollops of your attitude!

At CHOLI BOLI there are no preconceived notions. At every step we experiment to evolve. You will find our designs fluid and blending into whatever garment you choose to mix and match with it – jeans, skirts, sarees, harem pants, giving you the same feel as in your comfort that  shift – to break the suffocating embrace of the blouse too-tight!

INSPIRING BREAST CONFIDENCE

Breast and body confidence hinders women in the workplace, affecting their career and their social paths. Women have been conscious about their breasts from time immemorial. A woman’s self-esteem could take a direct knock even by a harmless comment on her breasts. From a long time they have been hiding their breasts or wanting validation by the society or fashion trends. Notably, men are more conscious about women’s breasts and women are sensitive to that. Younger women want killer cleavages while the older generation desire to lift and enhance their natural curves. Girls in puberty want to hide their small growing breasts. All these are unconscious official acceptability that women feel that they need. What they actually need is “breast confidence”. Women need to accept their breasts. In whatever sizes and shapes that they are, they need to believe that they are perfect. Hence CHOLI BOLI is a part of the “Inspiring Breast Confidence” movement. We want to impress upon all women that their breasts like any other part of their body satisfies the specific functions of nurturance. They don’t need to hide it when they are feeding their children nor do they have to feel depressed if they lose one or both to cancer. Their breasts need to be freed not from their clothings but from the mind sets and attitudes. Let your breasts speak. As in CHOLI BOLI we believe that your breasts have a story to tell!

PEOPLE BEHIND CHOLI BOLI

The company is founded by Arunisha Sengupta, a veteran MARCOM professional. Up until recently she was in the coveted panel of founder members of The Blue Ocean IMC, a young cutting edge MARCOM group. Before that she was with Percept Profile – a communications conglomerate for over 8 years and prior to that she was with Tops Security as Vice President Corporate Communications. She has had a prolific working experience with Global Brand Communications houses like J Walter Thompson. And she prides herself for being starting and sustaining many business verticals in her erstwhile roles.

Passionate about brands and having had worked for many in their various life cycles, across various domains, the entrepreneurial bug bit her and she wanted to birth a consumer/retail brand that would create a powerful paradigm shift. It had to be for women, she decided, as she found the increasing discomfort in wearing a saree in boardrooms and even casually by millennials. But the saree was not the problem she deciphered, after much research and in-depth insightful discussions with women. It was the confidence in it and its vulnerability to fall of the shoulders. Also the negative objectification of the Indian blouse that bothered her.

Working with a bunch of designers and artisans her vision is to make the Indian CHOLI a global phenomenon. She has always believed that through this initiative she would in their own small way revere the grand workings of the divine feminine energy that is infused in the nature all around us!

Arunisha believes that a working woman is a fiery force and it gives her and all women an advantage. According to her, “you may have myriad experience & expertise, skill & qualification, but only a woman brings, empathy, compassion, loyalty, sincerity, multi-dimension, pragmatism and intuition to a given task”. She therefore likes to present herself as “W@W” (reads WOW!) – a WOMAN AT WORK.

Clothes are an expression of one’s own self – Designer Swatti Kapoor

by Team Conscious Carma April 4, 2022
written by Team Conscious Carma

SWATTI KAPOOR  embodies a way of life that is rooted in culture, craft and community. We stand at an interesting intersection of local and global, traditional and innovative, classic and contemporary. We believe in looking back while moving forward. We are about slow living with sustainability at its heart. For us the process is as important as the product. Our story is a collective narrative of all the makers whose shared efforts culminate in a beautiful legacy.

SWATTI KAPOOR grew as a response to an ever-changing world. It signals a shift from rapid consumption and disposal to ethical choices and mindful living. It recognizes that green fashion is no longer an alternative, but a necessity. “We take responsibility for the earth in our small way and consciously strive towards reducing waste and devising eco-friendly methods of crafting our garments. We also operate on a made-to-order model, eliminating typical inventory issues that lead to over production.”, says Designer Swatti Kapoor.

Swatti’s interest in fashion started early on in her life. Seeing her mother work in the garment industry for many years, she grew up surrounded by sketches and swatches!  She understood that clothes were an expression of one’s own self… a story with an effortless narrative. To hone her craft and to fall deeper in love, Swatti joined the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in the capital and graduated in the year 2010.

Her love for Indian textiles, made Fabindia an obvious choice as her first stint in the industry.  After setting a sound base, Swatti, went on to learn a completely different language of fashion. At the complete opposite end of the spectrum, she trained under the mighty and majestic Tarun Thailiani . After spending 5 years under his guidance, Swatti was ready to embark on her own journey. Thus – Swatti Kapoor the label was born as an occasion wear label.

However, after the birth of her daughter, Swatti decided to give a break to her professional career and devote all her time in bringing up her little one.  In 2019, Swatii relaunched her label and this she focused on pret wear. And she went on to participate in Khadi and Village Industries Commission’s  (KVIC) pan-India designer contest which was organized for the first time in the year 2021 to show the transformation of khadi as a fashion fabric and promote it. Out of over 300 designers across the country, Swatti was among the 10 designers who were shortlisted for the khadi fashion show organized by KVIC and curated by the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI). Swatti was declared the winner and took home a cash award of ten lakhs. Sunil Sethi, Chairman, FDCI, who is also Honorary Consultant/Advisor for khadi promotion, and fashion designer Anju Modi were among the jury members for Khadi Designer Awards.

“I work with handloom, and I wanted to present a sustainable collection. The focus was on presenting khadi with a lot of Indian craft and technique”, said the designer about her award winning collection. At Swatti Kapoor, our range of clothing revolves around the premise of inspiring thoughtfulness. We use handwoven textiles, natural materials and artisanal techniques to create products with a global and timeless appeal.

Swatti is now looking forward to her participation in the forthcoming FDCI X Lakme Fashion Week to be held from 23rd to 27th March 2022, in New Delhi.  Her Fashion show is slated on March 25th wherein she will be showcasing her latest pret collection.
